What the programme is

A neighbourhood programme brings the households of one postcode together, so installers can work street by street rather than one house at a time. We do not install, and we are not owned by anyone who does.

The programme runs in four stages:

  1. Education. Sessions in the community come before anything else. Nobody representing the programme sells at a community event.
  2. Registration. Neighbours register their interest in one place.
  3. Installation. Installers provide a licence and accreditation number before they can take a job. Up to three installers quote on a residential job, two on a commercial job.
  4. Reporting. Figures we publish will show their method, source and date.

What makes it different

Larger cohorts let installers plan, buy and crew efficiently, so the saving can be passed to the household. There are no additional subsidies. The advantage is meant to come from volume and efficiency.

Jobs are allocated by rotation across eligible installers. Nobody can buy a place at the front of the queue.

What happens next

Registration follows, then installation, then reporting. We have not set a date. Figures we publish will show their method, source and date.

The founder

Dewayne Montey has spent 20 years across the energy supply chain: wholesale, residential, commercial and industrial, and community programmes. Ecovation, the company he ran then, partnered with Logan City Council in May 2009 on a street by street solar hot water programme, and was named in Queensland Parliament on 26 November 2009 as one of two companies contracted under the state scheme. The lesson he carries into SaveTonnes 4218 is that neighbours who have already said yes do the persuading.
