EV charger
How it works, and where it sits
A home EV charger is a wall unit on its own dedicated circuit from your switchboard. The unit controls how fast the car charges and, on a smart charger, when it charges. The electricity comes from the grid, from your solar while the sun is up, or from a battery, depending on what you have and how the charger is set. A smart charger can be set to follow solar, so the car takes what the roof is producing. EV charger is step 04 of our ten-step order, after 03 Battery storage + emergency backup and before 05 Air conditioning.
Savings figures
We publish no dollar figure for a home EV charger. The questions that matter for your quotes are whether your switchboard and supply can take a dedicated charging circuit, single phase or three phase, where the unit should go, and whether it should follow solar. Start with a plan before you ask for quotes.
What an installer must hold
Installers provide a licence and accreditation number before they can take a job. For an EV charger that means a Queensland electrical contractor licence.
What to expect from a quote
Up to three installers quote on a residential job. Ask each installer to set out charger make, model and charging rate in kW, single or three phase, the cable run and where the unit mounts, any switchboard or supply work, how solar following and scheduling are set up, the product and workmanship warranty terms, what is excluded, and the install date. One enquiry, up to three quotes from local installers.
