Solar PV
How it works, and where it sits
Solar panels turn sunlight into direct current. An inverter converts it to the alternating current your home runs on. Whatever you use while the sun is up comes from the roof first. What you do not use goes to the grid, or into a battery if you have one. Solar PV is step 02 of our ten-step order, after 01 Hot water heat pumps and before 03 Battery storage + emergency backup.
What it is worth
From $1,600 a year on power bills

Assumes a 6 kW solar-only system and an average household.
Your own result depends on your roof, your daytime use and your tariff.
What an installer must hold
Installers provide a licence and accreditation number before they can take a job. For solar that means SAA accreditation and a Queensland electrical contractor licence.
What to expect from a quote
Up to three installers quote on a residential job. Ask each installer to set out panel make, model and count, inverter make and model, system size in kW, the roof sections used, any switchboard work, the grid connection application, the product and workmanship warranty terms, what is excluded, and the install date. One enquiry, up to three quotes from local installers.
